Turkish foreign minister to take part in UN Security Council meeting on Gaza conflict

During his visit to New York, Hakan Fidan will also meet with members of group formed to follow up on decisions taken at joint Islamic-Arab summit

WASHINGTON (AA) - Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will visit New York to participate in a UN Security Council meeting on the Gaza conflict on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

Fidan will also hold a series of contacts with other members of the group formed to follow up on the decisions taken at the extraordinary joint summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and Arab League on Nov. 11, the ministry said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan telephoned UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the role of the international community in bringing an end to Israel's attacks on Gaza.

Erdogan told Guterres that Israel continues to violate international law, the law of war, and humanitarian law "recklessly," in full view of the international community, and that it must be held accountable for the crimes committed before international law, according to Türkiye's Communications Directorate.

Qatar announced an agreement late Monday to extend the initial four-day humanitarian pause in Gaza for an additional two days, under which further prisoner exchanges will be carried out.

Israel launched a massive military campaign in the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7.

It has since killed over 15,000 people, including 6,150 children and 4,000 women, according to health authorities in the enclave.

The official Israeli death toll stands at 1,200.
