BERLIN (AA) - The Turkish Muslim community in Germany delivered hot meals and clean drinking water Monday to 500 victims in the flood-hit town of Ahrweiler.
Volunteers from DITIB, the largest Turkish Muslim association in the country, continue to distribute food and water and help victims in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate.
Melanie Brucken, manager of Ahrweiler Disaster Relief, thanked the volunteers from DITIB, "who did not leave us alone in these difficult times.”
Umran Aslan, the head of DITIB's women's branch in the Cologne region, stressed that DITIB volunteers have been in the field since the first moment of the disaster.
"We strive to meet the needs of the people in the region. Today, we wanted to touch their hearts by serving them hot meals.”
Germany’s worst flooding in decades has claimed at least 180 lives and caused widespread devastation in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate.
