ISTANBUL (AA) – The Turkish president marked the 101st anniversary of Istanbul's liberation from enemy occupation with a message emphasizing the importance of preserving and advancing the republic, which was founded on the heritage of Türkiye's ancient civilization.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a message to the ceremony on Sunday commemorating Istanbul's 101st anniversary of liberation from enemy occupation.

The Turkish president praised the sacrifices of martyrs and veterans during the War of Independence, noting that their heroism and dedication played a vital role in securing the nation’s independence and freedom.

“We continue to work with great determination to protect and sustain our republic, built upon the legacy of our ancient civilization, to elevate it above the level of contemporary civilizations, and to carry it into the future by strengthening it with new achievements,” he said.

“I honor all the heroes of our War of Independence with respect and remembrance," Erdogan said, reflecting on the significance of their contributions to Türkiye's sovereignty.

After World War I, the allies occupied Istanbul by anchoring their fleets off Istanbul on Nov. 13, 1918, following the Armistice of Mudros signed on Oct. 30, 1918.

Today marks the 101st anniversary of Istanbul’s liberation, which occurred after nearly four years, 10 months, and 23 days of occupation.
