PORT SUDAN/ISTANBUL (AA) - The Turkish Red Crescent provided iftar, or fast-breaking meals, to 1,000 displaced people in the eastern Sudanese city of Port Sudan.
The iftar program was held at a camp hosting displaced families in Port Sudan, the capital of Red Sea state, and was attended by Türkiye’s Ambassador to Khartoum, Turkish Embassy staff, Sudanese Red Crescent Secretary-General Ahmed Al-Tayyib Suleiman, representatives of international aid organizations operating in Sudan and members of the Turkish Red Crescent’s Sudan team.
Yıldız told Analolu that humanitarian aid materials sent by Türkiye and the Turkish people to Sudan arrived in Port Sudan in December and January aboard four large ships that was coordinated by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
He noted that the distribution of food and hygiene supplies delivered by AFAD and the Turkish Red Crescent is ongoing, and as part of its Ramadan activities, the Turkish Red Crescent plans to provide iftar meals to 20,000 displaced people in five states.
Yıldız also said the organization would distribute food parcels to families in need and provide holiday clothing for children for the Eid festival after Ramadan.
“The humanitarian assistance of the Turkish people in Sudan is not limited to state efforts. More than 20 Turkish non-governmental organizations are conducting aid activities on the ground,” said Yıldız, adding that iftar meals, food parcels, cash assistance and Eid clothing distribution will continue throughout Ramadan.
He said the historical and cultural ties between the Turkish and Sudanese peoples have been further strengthened through humanitarian solidarity, especially at a time when the Sudanese people need support, stressing their commitment to maintaining the relations based on mutual respect.
Cesur Dervisoglu, head of the Turkish Red Crescent’s Sudan delegation, said aid operations are continuing despite the conflict and will intensify during Ramadan.
In cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent, the organization provided iftar meals to 1,000 displaced people and plans to distribute 7,500 food parcels and 2,800 sets of Eid clothing.
