Turkish shares go down at close
Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index closes 1 percent lower; Turkish lira loses against the US dollar
ANKARA (AA) - Turkey’s benchmark index was down 1 percent at the close of the daily session Monday.
The BIST 100 index fell 755.07 points to close at 74,419.10. The total trading volume of the country's stock exchange market was 3.4 billion Turkish liras (approx. $1.03 billion).
On the first day of the week, the banking and holding sector indices declined 0.59 and 1.06 percent, respectively.
Among sector indices, the construction index rose the most -- by 2.30 percent -- while the biggest decline was seen in the food beverage index, which fell 4.13 percent.
The most heavily-traded stocks were private lender Garanti Bank, food company Ulker, state lender Halkbank, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, and real estate investment trust Emlak Konut.
Shares of Enka Insaat, which operates in the construction sector, were the top percent gainer with an increase of 2.64 percent in value, while wholesale trade company Bizim Toptan Satis, part of Turkish food giant Ulker, was the top percent loser as its shares were down 10.10 percent.
The Borsa Istanbul Gold Exchange index fell 2.66 percent in value, with gold trading at 129,390 Turkish liras (some $39,530) per kilogram.
Decrease in Turkish lira's value against the U.S. dollar continued on Monday to trade at 3.2760, compared to Friday's closing rate of 3.2550.
Analysts said investors would follow Turkey's unemployment figures of August, and externally, the U.S. retail trade figures and bond rates plus growth performance of the eurozone, which are set to be revealed on Tuesday.
