Turkish stocks higher at close, BIST up over 1 pct

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index closes 1.17 percent higher; lira slightly loses value against US dollar

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey’s benchmark index was up 1.17 percent at the close of the daily session Tuesday, Oct. 18.

The BIST 100 index increased by 902.82 points to close at 78,340.39. The total trading volume of the country's stock exchange market was 4.2 billion Turkish liras (approx. $1.35 billion).

On the second day of the week, the banking sector index, which was the most increased index, advanced 2.52 percent; the holding sector index was up 0.67 percent.

The tourism index was the most decreased among sector indices, with a decline of 0.71 percent.

The Borsa Istanbul Gold Exchange index rose 0.63 percent in value, with gold trading at 125,950 Turkish liras (some $40,504) per kilogram.

Analysts said although inflation figures from the U.S. were below expectations, the Turkish lira slightly lost value against the dollar to trade at 3.1060 compared to Monday's closing rate of 3.0950.

According to analysts, on Wednesday investors will follow speeches of Fed members from the U.S. and monitor Turkish companies' third-quarter balance sheets.
