Turkiye's retail sales grow nearly 8% in January

Non-food sales, excluding automotive fuel, surges 15.8% on annual basis

ANKARA (AA) - Turkiye’s retail sales volume, a marker of growing consumer spending, jumped 7.9% year-on-year in January, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) on Friday.

Non-food sales – excluding automotive fuel – soared 15.8%, with textile, clothing and footwear sales posting the largest rise among non-food items, up 37% in January from the same month of last year.

Food, drinks and tobacco sales rose slightly by 0.5%, while automotive fuel sales decreased by 0.4% in the month.

On a monthly basis, Turkiye’s retail trade fell 1.5% this January. It saw a 2.2% decrease in December 2021.

While food, drinks and tobacco sales rose by 0.4% month-on-month in January, non-food and automotive fuel sales decreased by 2.6% and 2.1%, respectively.

Among non-food items, the largest decline was seen in sales of computer, books telecommunication equipment, which was down 3.6% from a month ago.

Electronic goods and furniture sales and textile, clothing and footwear sales slipped by 3.4% and 2.1%, respectively.
