Twitter suspends Venezuelan National Assembly account

Company keeps account of opposition assembly supported by US and some Western countries active

ANKARA (AA) - After closing down the accounts of former US President Donald Trump and thousands of Republicans recently, Twitter has also controversially suspended the account of the Venezuelan National Assembly elected by the people.

The Venezuelan National Assembly's official Twitter account page @LaNuevaAsamblea late Thursday showed "Account suspended."

Twitter has not made any official statement so far.

The assembly was formed following the Dec. 6 elections won by the ruling party and its ally parties with over 67.6% of the votes cast for the socialist Simon Bolivar Great Patriotic Pole, bringing it 253 of the 277 seats available.

Twitter, on the other hand, decided to keep the account of the former opposition assembly, @AsambleaVE, active. Former assembly was led by Juan Guaido, an opposition politician who has declared himself the president of Venezuela in 2019, a move backed by the US and dozens of US-allied countries, but rejected by the majority of UN member states.

On Jan. 8, Twitter suspended more than a dozen accounts associated with Venezuela’s military and elected government, controversially taking sides in internal matters of a sovereign country.
