Typhoon Bualoi leaves 29 dead, 22 missing in Vietnam, causes over $300M in damage

Tens of thousands of houses damaged, agriculture hit, say officials in wake of storm

ISTANBUL (AA) - Typhoon Bualoi has left at least 29 people dead and 22 missing in Vietnam while costing the country over $300 million in property damage, officials said Wednesday.

A total of 139 people were injured during the storm, according to the Department of Dike Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, as cited by the Viet Nam News daily.

Bualoi caused dike breaches, flooding, and landslides in numerous areas.

A total of 91 houses collapsed or were swept away across northern and central localities, with nearly 145,000 houses damaged and over 20,000 submerged due to the typhoon. More than 1,076 schools were also damaged.

Agriculture was also affected, with around 44,000 hectares of cultivated fields and aquacultures destroyed, and more than 180,000 livestock and poultry killed. Over 60,000 trees were uprooted.

According to initial estimates, the typhoon's economic damage to Vietnam stands over 8 trillion Vietnamese dong ($303 million).

The storm also cut power to nearly 2.7 million households, of which 1.4 million have since regained electricity.
