U.S.-led coalition probes civilian casualties in Syria

Coalition admits responsibility for at least 1,139 civilian deaths in Iraq, Syria

By Umar Farooq

WASHINGTON (AA) - The U.S.-led coalition against Daesh terrorists on Friday said it was investigating possible civilian casualties in an alleged airstrike in Syria earlier this week.

"CJTF-OIR takes all allegations of civilian casualties seriously and investigates each incident reported through any means, via self-reporting," the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve said in a statement.

The airstrike occurred Tuesday, according to the coalition, however, they did not specify how many civilians were killed.

"This incident is under investigation, and CJTF-OIR will release additional details once it is complete," read the statement.

The monitoring group Airwars responded to the statement and alleged that Tuesday a woman was reported killed and her two children injured in an airstrike in the Syrian town of al-Baghouz.

Over the past few months, the U.S. carried out numerous strikes on different structures throughout Syria, with the claim they hosted Daesh terrorists, killing dozens of civilians.

The coalition admitted last month that it was responsible for the deaths of at least 1,139 civilians in Iraq and Syria since beginning airstrikes in August 2014.

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw troops from Syria, the coalition continues to conduct airstrikes in the region.
