UK reports highest daily jump in virus cases

41,385 coronavirus cases reported over past 24 hours, highest daily jump ever, amid new strain in Britain

ANKARA (AA) - UK health authorities on Monday reported 41,385 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, the highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic earlier this year.

A total of 357 people lost their lives due to COVID-19 over the past day, bringing total fatalities to 79,339, according to official data.

Some 2,143 people were admitted to hospitals, while 507,384 tests were carried out throughout the country in the last 24 hours.

The British government announced on Dec. 20 that a new variant of coronavirus was spreading throughout the country, a strain 70% more transmissible than earlier versions.

After seeing a jump in daily coronavirus infections, the government imposed tougher coronavirus restrictions for the holiday season.
