UK withdraws embassy staff from Iran amid security concerns

GENEVA (AA) - The UK has temporarily withdrawn its diplomatic staff from Iran due to the security situation, while continuing to advise its citizens against all travel to the country, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said Friday.

British officials, in a statement, said the embassy in Tehran will continue operating remotely following the move, which comes amid heightened regional tensions.

The FCDO "advises against all travel to Iran," warning that British nationals already in the country should "carefully consider" the risks of remaining there.

Authorities cautioned that British and dual British-Iranian nationals face a significant risk of arrest or detention, noting that "having a British passport or connections to the UK can be reason enough for the Iranian authorities to detain you."

The government also warned that travel insurance could be invalidated for those who visit despite official advice.

Officials cited a "heightened risk of regional tension," saying any escalation could lead to travel disruption and other unforeseen impacts.

British nationals were urged to take precautions based on their personal circumstances amid current security conditions.
