KYIV, Ukraine (AA) - Ukraine on Monday introduced a mandatory 14-day quarantine for arrivals from seven African countries as a counter measure against the spread of the Omicron variant of coronavirus.
The Health Ministry said all those who arrived in Ukraine in the last 14 days after spending more than seven days in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini and Mozambique, are required to stay in quarantine for two weeks.
Citizens have also been advised to avoid travel to the countries in question.
South African scientists detected the new strain, which has been declared as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization.
The UN health agency has warned that it poses a "very high" risk globally, despite uncertainties about the danger and contagion levels of the new strain.
Several countries have imposed restrictions, and banned flights from over half a dozen Southern African nations.
