Ukrainians rally to demand cap on military service, return of those who serve 18 months

Petition demanding amendment to legislation collects 25,000 votes necessary to be considered by head of state

MOSCOW (AA) – Ukrainians on Monday continued rallying for an amendment to the legislation regulating issues of military mobilization.

Demonstrations took place in the cities of Khmelnytskyi, Kryvyi Rih, Lviv, Odesa, and Zhytomyr, as protesters demanded the term of military mobilization be limited to 18 months and those who have already served this period in the army return home, according to Ukrainian media.

Dozens of people took to the streets on Sunday and continued their protest on Monday on a smaller scale.

The relevant petition on the necessary amendments to the legislation was published on the website of the Ukrainian president, which gathered 25,000 votes necessary to be considered by the head of the state.

The current law on military duty and military service does not define the term of service for mobilized people during martial law, as the protesters demand to fix this problem as soon as possible.

The general military mobilization in Ukraine was announced in February 2022 after Russia started a war on its southwestern neighbor.
