UN allocates $20M for humanitarian needs in conflict-torn Sudan

More than 4 million people displaced since outbreak of violence in Sudan in April

ANKARA (AA) – The United Nations on Wednesday allocated additional $20 million for growing humanitarian needs in conflict-ridden Sudan.

"As humanitarian needs soar in Sudan with critically low funding, I've approved an additional $20M from UNCERF [the UN emergency response fund]," UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths said on X, previously known as Twitter.

He said the new amount brings to $60 million the UN emergency allocations to Sudan this year.

"Civilians need life-saving assistance now; humanitarians need access and funding to deliver it," Griffiths said.

Thousands of people have been killed and more than four million displaced since the outbreak of clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group in Sudan in April, according to UN estimates.

In June, the two warring parties signed a humanitarian agreement in Saudi Arabia which granted the opening of humanitarian corridors to deliver assistance to civilians. However, the truce was repeatedly violated by the two rivals.
