UN assessing humanitarian needs after cyclone batters Bangladesh, India

At least 56 people were killed after Cyclone Remal made landfall on Bangladesh’s coast Sunday night

ISTANBUL (AA) - UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said Thursday he was "concerned by the growing impact" of cyclone Remal on Bangladesh and India which killed at least 56 people.

"We're assessing humanitarian needs and stand ready to support local authorities in the emergency response," Griffiths said on X.

At least 56 people, including 40 in India, have been killed after the cyclone made landfall on Bangladesh’s coast Sunday night.

The cyclone affected nearly four million people and destroyed thousands of houses and cropland in India and Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also undertook an aerial visit to the coastal Mathbaria and Pathorghata areas on Wednesday to inspect the damage caused by the cyclone.
