GENEVA (AA) - The gestation period for climate action has been "long enough" and the world is now at a "tipping point," the UN climate change executive secretary warned on Monday.
Simon Stiell's remarks came at the Opening Plenary of the Climate Change Conference which will continue until June 15 in Bonn, Germany.
"I believe we are at a tipping point. We know that rapid change often follows a long gestation period," he said, adding that "the gestation period for climate action has been long enough."
"We need to bring that tipping point forward," Stiell urged.
For the ambitious goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and delivering a resilient sustainable future for all, making progress in all areas is a "must" as it will set the frame for the UN Climate Change Conference, COP28, he stressed.
"Ambition is nothing without action. Sufficient means of implementation are essential for us to deliver on our commitments," he said.
Agreement on the transition path the world needs to take to be resilient for global goals, and the budget for the next two-year period are on the agenda in Bonn.
During the conference, key talks will be held that aim to lay the groundwork for the COP28 in the UAE on Nov. 30-Dec. 12.
