UN extends mandate of team probing Daesh/ISIS war crimes for 1 final year

Iraq asks UN team to provide evidence it has collected within next year to prosecute members of Daesh/ISIS terror group

By Betul Yuruk

UNITED NATIONS (AA) - The UN Security Council renewed the mandate of the UN investigative team to promote accountability for crimes committed by the Daesh/ISIS terror group, known as UNITAD, for a final one-year, non-extendable term.

The mandate of the UN team was extended until Sept. 17, 2024.

The resolution drafted by the UK said that the request for the extension came from the Iraqi government.

The Iraqi government asked the UN team to provide the evidence it has collected within the next year to hold the members of the Daesh/ISIS terror group accountable.

The UN investigative team in Iraq was established in 2017 to gather evidence to support prosecutions of members of the terror group.

Deash/ISIS seized vast swathes of territory in Iraq in Syria and declared a self-styled caliphate in 2014. The terror group suffered key losses in 2017.
