UN Security Council expresses concern about Fashir violence in Sudan
Security Council urges military, Rapid Support Forces to maintain peace in Fashir
The UN Security Council voiced apprehension Saturday about heightened violence in Fashir, a city in Sudan's North Darfur state.
The Security Council stressed the potential ramifications of any assault on the city, which currently accommodates a substantial population of internally displaced persons.
The Council urged the military and Rapid Support Forces to deescalate tensions and fulfill their obligations under international law, particularly emphasizing the imperative of maintaining peace in Fashir.
Despite diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, including mediation by Saudi Arabia, the US and Egypt, as well as initiatives by regional organizations, the protracted conflict in Sudan has led to extensive casualties, displacement and a dire humanitarian crisis.
It underscores the pressing need for sustained international engagement to bring about a lasting solution.
