HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - The UN Security Council on Monday unanimously extended the mandate of its assistance mission in Afghanistan for one year without altering its tasks or priorities.

The resolution extends the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) until March 17, 2026.

It urges "all relevant Afghan political actors and stakeholders, including relevant authorities as needed, as well as international actors to coordinate with UNAMA in the implementation of its mandate and to ensure the safety, security and freedom of movement of United Nations and associated personnel throughout the country."

The 15-member Council also requested that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres provide quarterly reports on the situation in Afghanistan and the implementation of UNAMA’s mandate, including at the subnational level.

Based in Kabul, UNAMA has approximately 1,200 personnel.
