NEW DELHI (AA) - India said Wednesday that the UN Security Council lacks effectiveness and needs reforms.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said a meeting of G20 Foreign Ministers in New York that while the world had evolved into a “smart, interconnected, and multi-polar arena,” the UN “remains a prisoner of the past.”
“As a result, the Security Council struggles to fulfill its mandate of maintaining international peace and security, undermining its effectiveness and credibility,” he said.
Without reforms. including an expansion of the Council’s membership, he said, “Its lack of effectiveness will only continue.”
“Expansion and proper representation in the permanent category is a particular imperative. Asia, Africa and Latin America- the Global South cannot continue to be shortchanged,” he said. “They must be given their legitimate voices. Real change needs to happen, and happen fast.”
