UN special envoy for Syria hopes accord will contribute to a broader political transition in the war-torn country

ISTANBUL (AA) - UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen has welcomed an agreement signed on March 10 by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Ferhad Abdi Sahin, aimed at integrating Syrian Arab Republic institutions and securing territorial unity.

Pedersen on Tuesday hoped that the accord will contribute to a broader political transition in the war-torn country, in line with UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2254.

In a post on X, Pedersen "hopes that the agreement can support and feed into a broader, credible and inclusive political transition process in line with the key principles of SCR 2254, that leads to a new constitution and free and fair elections."

He urged key international stakeholders, including the US, Türkiye, and regional partners, to support their Syrian counterparts in ensuring stability in northeast Syria.

"It is imperative that all parties work toward a nationwide ceasefire and make the necessary compromises to achieve lasting peace," he added.

UNSCR 2254, adopted in 2015, outlines a roadmap for resolving the Syrian conflict, including political negotiations, constitutional reforms, and elections under UN supervision.
