BERLIN (AA) - At least two people were killed and several others were injured when a car drove into pedestrians in the city of Mannheim, German authorities said on Monday.

Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl confirmed that the driver, a 40-year-old German citizen, was arrested shortly after the incident. His possible motive was not immediately clear.

Mannheim police department released a statement on X, and lifted an earlier warning for citizens to stay indoors and avoid the city center. “There are no indications of a second perpetrator. There is currently no danger to the public,” the police said.

According to local media reports, at least 10 people were injured, including some seriously who faced emergency surgery. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect also sustained injuries and was receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

Prosecutors said a joint press release that at the current stage of the investigation, they have no evidence indicating that the suspect acted with any "political motivation."

Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it “a senseless act” of violence. “Once again, we mourn with the families of the victims,” he said, and thanked emergency services for their swift response and dedicated efforts to help the injured and traumatized.
