UPDATE - 5.8 magnitude earthquake hits northeast Chile

ISTANBUL (AA) - A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck northeast Chile on Sunday, National Seismological Center said.

The tremor occurred 57 kilometers (35.4 miles) northeast of city of Pica in Tarapaca region at 1.23 pm local time (1623GMT) with a depth of 121 kilometers, according to the center at the University of Chile.

The National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (SENAPRED) said monitoring began through the Mercalli Informant Network following the earthquake.

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service indicated the earthquake's characteristics do not meet necessary conditions to generate a tsunami on Chilean coasts.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake at magnitude 5.7, locating it 76 kilometers (47.2 miles) east-northeast of the town of La Tirana at with a depth of 119 km.

No immediate reports of damage or casualties were reported.

The region also experienced a 4.2-magnitude earthquake at 0725GMT earlier in the day.
