ISTANBUL (AA) - Three rockets landed Saturday evening in a residential neighborhood of the Syrian capital and near Mezzeh Military Airport, causing explosions heard across parts of Damascus, Syrian state media reported.
A security source told state-run Alikhbariya TV that the rockets struck the Mezzeh 86 neighborhood and the vicinity of Mezzeh airport at the same time.
One of the rockets caused damage to the Al-Mohammadi Mosque in Mezzeh 86, the source said.
Internal security forces were deployed to the area and have launched an investigation to identify those responsible, according to the source.
The channel earlier reported that a rocket landed near Mezzeh Military Airport, causing explosions heard across parts of Damascus.
A security source told the channel that the sound of explosions in Damascus was the result of a rocket fired by unidentified gunmen that fell in the airport’s vicinity.
No party claimed responsibility.
The explosions came as Syria’s new administration attempts to tighten security across the country following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024 after 24 years in power.
Assad fled to Russia, marking the end of the Baath Party’s rule since 1963. A transitional administration headed by President Ahmad Al-Sharaa took office in January 2025.
