UPDATES WITH NEW DETAILS, EDITS THROUGHOUT
BERLIN (AA) - Two people were killed and 15 injured when a car drove into pedestrians on Tuesday in the western German town of Trier.
Police said on Twitter that the driver, a 51-year-old man, has been arrested, but gave no further details.
Local media reported that he was a German citizen, and a resident of Trier-Saarburg, a district in the west of the Rhineland-Palatinate state.
Wolfram Leibe, Trier’s mayor, told SWR radio that they believed the driver "ran amok" and crashed his vehicle into the bystanders.
Several of the people wounded in the incident were taken to hospital in a serious condition, he said.
Eyewitnesses said the car had driven straight through the crowd at high speed in the pedestrian zone.
Recent years have seen a number of incidents of terrorist attacks using cars driving into pedestrians in both Europe and the United States.
