ISTANBUL (AA) - A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck on Saturday near the border between the US state of Alaska and Canada, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake hit near Alaska's southeastern borough of Yakutat at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) at 2041GMT, according to the government agency.
The earthquake was followed by at least 33 aftershocks, with the largest measuring magnitude 5.1.
The US Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The region has a very small population.
The agency named the quake the 2025 Hubbard Glacier Earthquake, saying it occurred "as the result of oblique slip along or near the plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates."
The plate boundary region has been the site of major earthquakes before, including the 7.8 magnitude Lituya Bay earthquake in 1958, which triggered a large tsunami.
Sixteen more earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater have occurred in the surrounding area since 1950, according to the agency.
In 1987, a 7.9 magnitude strike-slip earthquake took place near the southwestern tip of the Yakutat block in the Gulf of Alaska.
