KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - A massive explosion late Sunday night targeted a convoy of foreign nationals near an international airport in Pakistan's commercial capital Karachi, killing at least one person and injuring eight others, including a foreign national, police and local media reported.
Zia Lanjar, home minister for the southern Sindh province, which includes Karachi, told reporters that the explosion targeted a vehicle carrying foreign nationals outside the airport and had killed one of them.
He said the injured foreign nationals were taken to the hospital, but did not give their nationalities.
The condition of at least two of the injured was said to be precarious.
Footage on local broadcaster Geo News showed giant plumes of fire coming from several damaged vehicles blowing upwards as firefighters struggled to douse the blaze.
The home minister said that according to an initial investigation, the blast was from an improvised explosive device.
The explosion was heard miles away from the airport.
All airport installations are safe, and flight schedules are unchanged, a civil aviation authority spokesperson said in a statement.
This was the second terrorist attack targeting foreign nationals in less than two weeks.
Last month an IED explosion targeted a convoy of foreign diplomats in northwestern Pakistan, killing a police officer.
