BIST 100 index decreases 1.33 pct at close; Turkish lira gains ground

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index closed Tuesday down 1.33 percent at 105,113.38 points with a trading volume of around 6.5 billion Turkish liras ($1.42 billion).
Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index ended the day with a 1,411.87-point fall from the previous close of 106,525.25 points, while it opened the day at 105,930.26 points, up 0.56 percent.
The benchmark index hovered between 104,286.93 points and 105,930.26 points, while 23 stocks on the index were on the rise, 66 on the decline, and 11 flat compared to the previous close.
The banking and holding sector indices slipped 1.68 percent and 1.65 percent, respectively.
Among all sectors, the wood, paper, printing sector index was the best performer, rising 1.09 percent, and the leasing factoring sector index saw the biggest drop, losing 16.04 percent.
Stocks of casting producer Cemas Dokum climbed the most, up 19.90 percent, while shares of conglomerate Metro Holding were the worst, falling 4.76 percent.
The BIST 100's most-traded listed companies were private lender Garanti, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, iron/steel producer Kardemir, state lender Halkbank, and energy and mining company Ipek Dogal Enerji.
The USD/TRY exchange slipped to 4.5790 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) Tuesday, down from 4.5930 at Monday's close.
The euro/lira exchange rate also dropped to 5.3050 by market close, versus 5,3410 at the previous close, and one British pound was traded for 6.0930 Turkish liras, compared with 6.1260 at Monday's close.
The BIST Gold Exchange index fell by 0.31 percent at the close. In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold traded for $1,295.00 as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT) Tuesday, compared with $1,299 at the previous close.
As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $75.59 per barrel -- hovering between $75.23 and $76.22 during the course of Tuesday -- up from around $66 at the beginning of 2018.
