BIST 100 index slips 1.5 pct or 1,394 points from previous close

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's stock exchange dropped 1.5 percent to close at 91,445.28 points on Monday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index lost 1,393.92 points from last week's close of 92,839.21 points, while it started the day at 93,005.79 points.

The benchmark index hovered between 91,445.28 points and 93,695.34 points, while 23 stocks on the index were on the rise, 73 on the decline, and four flat compared to the previous close.

The total market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 was around 595.7 billion Turkish liras ($108.7 billion) at the close, while the banking and holding sector indices rose 2.53 percent and 1.62 percent, respectively.

Among all sectors, the wholesale and retail trade sector index was the best performer, rising 3.96 percent, while the basic metal sector index saw the biggest drop, declining 4.18 percent.

Shares of cement maker Goltas Cimento (GOLTS) climbed the most, up 20.0 percent, while stocks of food giant Ulker Biskuvi (ULKER) did the worst, falling 6.17 percent.

The BIST 100's most-traded listed companies were private lender Garanti, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, leading defense company Aselsan, state lender Halkbank, and iron/steel producer Kardemir.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate dropped to 5.4420 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) on Monday. It was 5.4800 at last week's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate went down to 6.1370 by market close -- from 6.2190 at Friday's close -- and one British pound traded for 7.0420 Turkish liras compared to 7.1380 at the previous close.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil rose to $71.07 per barrel, compared with $70.18 at Friday's close.
