WASHINGTON (AA) - The US Senate on Friday rejected a House-passed bill to fund the federal government through Nov. 21.

By a vote of 44-48, the Senate did not pass H.R. 5371, Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026.

Republican senators Rand Paul and Lisa Murkowski voted no.

Sen. John Fetterman was the only Democratic senator who voted in favor of the measure, which passed the House earlier Friday by a 217-212 vote.

President Donald Trump said Republicans passed the continuing resolution (CR) in the lower chamber, "which was a very good thing because it shows that Republicans want to keep the government open."

Thanking Fetterman for voting with Republicans, Trump said the Democrats "want to shut the country down."
