US conducts 'self-defense' strikes against Houthi targets
United States Central Command says it determined that targets presented 'an imminent threat' to US Navy ships and merchant vessels in region

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US carried out "self-defense strikes" against Houthi targets in Yemen, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said Monday.
"Between 8:50 a.m. and 12:50 p.m. (Sanaa time) on March 11, Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen into the Red Sea toward the merchant vessel Pinocchio, a Singaporean-owned, Liberian-flagged ship," CENTCOM said on X.
The missiles did not impact the vessel and there were no injuries or damage reported, it added.
"Between 2:50-11:30 p.m. (Sanaa time) on March 11, United States Central Command conducted six self-defense strikes destroying an unmanned underwater vessel and 18 anti-ship missiles in Houthi controlled areas of Yemen," it said.
CENTCOM said these weapons presented an "imminent threat" to merchant vessels and to US Navy ships in the region.
"These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy and merchant vessels," it added.
Yemen’s Houthi group has been targeting cargo ships in the Red Sea owned or operated by Israeli companies or transporting goods to and from Israel in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli onslaught since Oct. 7 last year.
The Red Sea is one of the world's most frequently used sea routes for oil and fuel shipments.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently announced the creation of a multinational mission, Operation Prosperity Guardian, to counter the Houthi attacks.
