US 'deeply concerned' over Israeli airstrike on northern Gaza: State Department
'This was a horrifying incident with a horrifying result,' spokesman says, adding there are reports 2 dozen children killed in attack

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US is "deeply concerned" by the loss of civilian life in an Israeli airstrike on northern Gaza, the State Department said on Tuesday.
"This was a horrifying incident with a horrifying result," spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.
His remarks came after the Gaza Health Ministry said that at least 93 Palestinians were killed and dozens were injured in an Israeli strike on a residential building in the town of Beit Lahiya on Tuesday.
Miller said he could not speak about the total death toll, but added: "There are reports of two dozen children killed in this incident."
The US has reached out to the Israeli government to ask what happened there, he added.
More than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its war against the enclave on Oct. 7, 2023, with most of the dead being women and children, and more than 101,000 injured, according to local health authorities.
More than a year into the Israeli onslaught, vast tracts of Gaza lay in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.
Israel stands accused of genocide against Palestinians at the International Court of Justice.
