US defense chief discusses cooperation, Gaza war in Qatar

DOHA, Qatar (AA) – US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin held discussions in Doha on Tuesday with Qatari officials, focusing on ways to strengthen cooperation between the two nations and addressing the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

During a meeting, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Lloyd Austin "examined the close and strategic relations between Qatar and the United States, particularly in the military realm. They also delved into the latest developments in both the regional and international landscapes," the official Qatar News Agency reported.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah also met with Austin, joined by senior officials and leaders from both sides.

The discussions encompassed "topics of mutual interest, a review of the collaboration between the two parties, and methods to strengthen and advance it," according to the agency.

Furthermore, it was noted that "both parties addressed the recent developments in the region, with a specific focus on the Israeli conflict in Gaza. The talks highlighted Qatar's role in mediation efforts, emphasizing its commitment to cease-fire and reducing military escalation."

Since the commencement of the conflict, the United States has extended substantial military, intelligence, and diplomatic support to Israel, leading to critiques both domestically and internationally regarding the Biden administration's approach.

Qatar marks the concluding destination of Austin's Middle East tour, which previously included visits to Israel and Bahrain.
