NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) - US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Kenya’s Defense Minister Aden Duale paid tribute to fallen American heroes on Tuesday.
The Manda Bay attack, which occurred on Jan. 5, 2020, was a significant assault by al-Shabaab terrorists on Naval Base Manda Bay, Kenya.
In the pre-dawn raid, Al-Shabaab targeted the base, resulting in the tragic loss of life of three American soldiers and millions of dollars worth of damage to US government resources.
“Earlier today, I was at Manda Bay to meet with Kenyan partners and our US service members deployed here,” said Austin, speaking after a tour of the facility.
“Our men and women in uniform play a vital role in promoting peace and security, both here in East Africa and around the world,” he said.
Austin emphasized the enduring commitment of the United States to stand beside its allies and partners in the fight against terrorism.
Duale expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support of the US and stressed the importance of collaboration in maintaining regional security.
During Austin’s visit to Kenya, the East African nation and the US signed a five-year defense pact.
The agreement solidifies the partnership between the US and Kenya and will see the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) receive comprehensive training as well as financial and technical assistance over the next five years.
Austin departed from Kenya on Tuesday and arrived in Angola, where he reaffirmed the commitment of the US to bolster its partnership with the country.
Austin's Africa tour has lasted six days, from Sept. 23 to 28, and will conclude in Angola.
