ISTANBUL (AA) — The US is deploying new troops to its southern border in order to increase border security, the Pentagon announced Saturday.
“As directed by President Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has ordered the deployment of a Stryker Brigade Combat Team and General Support Aviation Battalion to reinforce and expand current border security operations,” a Department of Defense statement said.
The troops are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, with the mission to “seal the border and protect the territorial integrity of the United States,” it said.
US Northern Command said about 2,900 soldiers from different elements will be sent to the region, but their specific locations were not revealed.
These units will bring the number of forces in the southern border to approximately 9,000, it said.
“These deployments will bring additional agility and capability to further efforts to stop the flow of illegal migrancy and drugs at the southern border,” said Gen. Gregory Guillot, the commander of the US Northern Command.
