ISTANBUL (AA) - Amid anticipation of a potential Iranian response to the April 1 Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, the US Embassy in Beirut on Saturday urged Americans to exercise caution.
"Due to high tensions in the region, the security environment remains complex and can change quickly," the embassy's security alert said.
"We remind U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and encourage them to monitor the news for breaking developments."
The alert specifically urged US citizens to avoid travel to areas near the Lebanon-Israel and Lebanon-Syria borders, as well as refugee settlements.
It advised great care and attention in all parts of Lebanon, particularly around demonstrations or large gatherings where tensions may escalate.
At least 13 people were killed in the attack on the Iranian consulate, including seven Iranian military advisers, which Iranian authorities blamed on Israel.
Among those killed included Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Syria and Lebanon, and his deputy Gen. Hadi Haj Rahemi.
After the attack, top Iranian political and military leaders have warned of a “decisive response."
Israel says it remains prepared and will respond if Iran attacks from its territory.
