US planning Afghanistan troop drawdown: Report
Extent of new policy remains unclear but could begin in coming weeks
By Michael Hernandez
WASHINGTON (AA) – U.S. President Donald Trump is planning a "substantial" drawdown of American forces from Afghanistan, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
The extent of the planned move is unclear, but the Journal said it could begin in the coming weeks.
The drawdown being considered by the administration is "substantial," it reported, citing anonymous officials.
The U.S. currently has roughly 14,000 troops in Afghanistan and has been in the country since it invaded in 2001 following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The potential move comes one day after Trump made a surprise announcement that the U.S. would be withdrawing completely from Syria, where it had ground forces working to fight Daesh since 2015.
