US president extends condolences to Morocco after deadly earthquake

ISTANBUL (AA) - US President Joe Biden on Saturday extended condolences with Morocco after an overnight earthquake in the North African country killed more than 800 people.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in Morocco. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by this terrible hardship,” Biden said in a statement.

The statement said that the US administration is in contact with Moroccan authorities.

“We are working expeditiously to ensure American citizens in Morocco are safe, and stand ready to provide any necessary assistance for the Moroccan people,” it added.

“The United States stands by Morocco and my friend King Mohammed VI at this difficult moment,” Biden said.

The strong earthquake struck central Morocco just after 11:00 p.m. local time (2211 GMT) on Friday, killing at least 820 people and injuring 672, according to the country's Interior Ministry.

The epicenter was 71 kilometers (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5 km, the US Geological Survey said.
