US: President Trump picks new security advisor
Gen. McMaster to replace Gen. Flynn, who resigned after Russia contacts controversy
NEW YORK (AA) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday picked Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster as his national security advisor, according to reports.
Trump called McMaster "a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience", according to The New York Times.
Gen. McMaster served in Afghanistan and is known for his roles in the Gulf War and Iraq War. He famously called into question U.S. policy that led to the Vietnam War.
McMaster is replacing Gen. Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign after a controversy over his communications with top Russian officials.
Flynn reportedly discussed the issue of U.S. sanctions on Moscow with Russia's Washington ambassador before Trump was sworn in as president, and then misled Trump administration officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, over the nature of his contacts.
It was the latter that was "unacceptable", Trump said in a recent news conference.
