ISTANBUL (AA) - US private payrolls lost 11,250 jobs per week in the four weeks through Oct. 25, according to a preliminary estimate released Tuesday by market research firm ADP.
The downturn suggested that the labor market struggled to produce jobs consistently during the second half of the month, ADP said in a statement.
ADP last week reported private nonfarm payroll growth of 42,000 for October after a two-month downturn. However, that growth only reflected data through the middle of the month.
"The gain was welcome, but it wasn’t broad-based. Education and healthcare, and trade, transportation, and utilities led the growth. For the third straight month, employers shed jobs in professional business services, information, and leisure and hospitality," it said regarding October's private sector job growth.
Prior to the release of private sector data, some economists had anticipated that the Bureau of Labor Statistics' official nonfarm payrolls tally for October would reveal a 60,000 monthly decline.
However, the government shutdown prevented the release of that report.
