WASHINGTON (AA) - US Sen. Bernie Sanders urged an investigation Friday into what he described as a “war against journalists,” citing rising casualties for reporters covering the conflict in the Gaza Strip and the surrounding region.
"Israel has killed 249 journalists in the last 2 years. That's more than were killed in WWII & the Vietnam War put together," Sanders wrote on US social media company X.
Sanders highlighted the case of Dylan Collins, a Vermont-born journalist who was wounded in an Israeli strike that also killed another reporter.
"A Vermonter, Dylan Collins, was wounded in one of these attacks, which killed another reporter. This war against journalists must be investigated & ended," he wrote.
On Thursday on Capitol Hill, a group of US lawmakers joined the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) to demand accountability from Israel and the Trump administration for the “targeted” Israeli attack that wounded Collins, who is an AFP journalist, and killed Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah in southern Lebanon in 2023.
Collins met separately with Sanders.
