US stock exchanges kick off August mixed

10-year US Treasury yield jumps 1.8% to 4.028%

ISTANBUL (AA) – Major stock exchanges in the US kicked off the month of August on a mixed note Tuesday.

The Dow Jones rose 113 points, or 0.3%, to 35,673 at 10:04 am EDT (1404GMT).

The S&P 500, on the other hand, was down five points, or 0.12%, to 4,583, while Nasdaq decreased 67 points, or 0.47%, to 14,280.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 2% to 13.92.

The 10-year US Treasury yield, meanwhile, jumped 1.8% to 4.028%.

The dollar index added 0.4% to 102.26, while the euro trimmed 0.2% to $1.0972 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold falling 0.9% to $1,948 per ounce and silver decreasing 1.7% to $24.33.

Oil prices were down around 0.5%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $84.94 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $81.25.
