US stock market begins new week flat
Oil prices down 1.7 percent at market opening
NEW YORK (AA) - The stock market begins the new week flat, after the decline in oil prices was balanced by the positive sentiment in the market Monday.
The Dow Jones fell 5 points to begin the day at 18,511 points. The S&P 500 was up less than 1 point to open at 2,161 and the Nasdaq gained 3 points to begin the day at 5,033.
At the market opening, the American benchmark West Texas Intermediate was down 1.7 percent to $45.84, while the international benchmark Brent crude was trading at $46.77 a barrel with a 1.8 percent decline.
Last week, the Dow closed at an all-time high, rising by 2 percent. The S&P and the Nasdaq each gained 1.5 percent on a weekly basis.
The market will focus Tuesday on building permits and housing starts data for the month of June.
