US stock market closes lower

NEW YORK (AA) – American stocks closed lower Wednesday after losses by major American companies.

Citigroup fell 1.7 percent, while shares of American Airlines and Netflix each lost 1.9 percent.

After beginning the day with gains, the Dow moved into negative territory and failed to reach the psychological barrier of 20,000 points. The index lost 111 points to finish the day at 19,833.

The S&P decreased 18 points to 2,249 and the Nasdaq fell 48 points to close at 5,438.
