Oil prices up around 1 percent; FBI announcement clearing Hillary Clinton seems to buoy markets

NEW YORK (AA) - The stock market opened higher Monday with a rise in oil prices and new developments in the review of presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton's e-mail.

The Dow Jones added 241 points to begin the day at 18,129. The S&P 500 was up 28 points to 2,113, and the Nasdaq added 77 points to 5,124.

The FBI said Sunday that its review of Democrat Hillary Clinton's e-mails will not lead to charges, triggering positive sentiment in the market on the last trading day before presidential elections.

Indices had been off since Oct. 28 when the review was first announced, seen as good news for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

But Clinton again being cleared, boosting her campaign, seemed to warm the markets.

When the stock market opened, oil prices were on the rise.

At the first bell, American benchmark West Texas Intermediate was trading at $44.54 a barrel, a 1.2 percent increase. International benchmark Brent crude was at $45.95 per barrel, a 0.8 percent gain.

Markets and investors are now focused on the U.S. presidential election set for Tuesday.
