US stock market opens higher
Indices up, with non-farm payrolls rising the most in eight months
NEW YORK (AA) – The stock market opened higher on Friday as non-farm payrolls for June beat expectations and oil prices began rising again.
The Dow Jones rose 128 points to start the day at 18,024 points and the S&P 500 was up 14 points to open at 2,112, while the Nasdaq gained 27 points to begin the day at 4,904.
Non-farm payrolls increased 287,000 during June, marking the highest monthly jump since October, the Labor Department announced earlier Friday, beating the market expectation of 180,000.
In addition, oil prices rose more than one percent on Friday, helping indices begin the last trading day of the week with gains.
At the opening bell, American benchmark West Texas Intermediate was trading at $45.70 a barrel, a 1.3 percent increase, and international benchmark Brent crude was at $46.96 per barrel, a 1.2 percent gain.
