US stock market opens higher
Oil prices rise less than 1 percent
NEW YORK (AA) – Wall Street opened higher Tuesday with the increase in oil prices and gains in European stock markets.
The Dow Jones was up 41 points to begin the day at 18,295 and the S&P gained three points to start at 2,164. The Nasdaq added 16 points to open at 5,317.
At the first bell, American benchmark West Texas Intermediate was up 0.35 percent at $48.98 per barrel, while international benchmark Brent crude was trading at $51.20 with a 0.61 percent gain.
When Wall Street opened, Germany's DAX index was up 0.88 percent, while the U.K.'s FTSE posted a 1.89 percent increase, and France's CAC 40 saw a 1.15 percent gain.
On Monday, the stock market ended the day with losses as Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester said the Federal Reserve could raise its benchmark interest rate at its meeting on Nov. 2, just six days before the U.S. presidential election.
