US stock market opens higher to recover from major losses

ANKARA (AA) - Major indexes in the US stock market opened higher Friday trying to recover from the previous day's major losses.

The Dow Jones soared 230 points, or 0.67%, to 34,652 at 9.37 a.m. EDT after it fell 0.75% on Thursday.

The S&P 500 added 20 points, or 0.5%, to 4,341, while the Nasdaq was up 6 points to 14,566. The indexes declined 0.83% and 0.72%, respectively, in the previous session.

The dollar index was down 0.2% to 92.22, but the yield on the 10-year US Treasury rose 4.64% to 1.348%.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, plummeted 9.8% to 17.13, retreating from the 20 level it was hovering on Thursday.

After seven consecutive days of increase, gold was flat at $1,802 per ounce. Silver was up slightly at 25.98 with a 0.1% increase.
