US stock market opens lower

NEW YORK (AA) -- The stock market opened lower Tuesday after weak quarterly earnings of major American technology companies.

The Dow Jones fell 10 points to begin the day at 18,522 points. The S&P 500 was down 5 points to open at 2,162 and the Nasdaq lost 3 points to begin the day at 5,043.

After the final bell on Monday, American tech giants IBM and Yahoo announced weak quarterly income for the second quarter of the year.

IBM's net income decreased 28.6 percent to $2.5 billion during the April-June period, while Yahoo's losses rose to $440 million, from $22 million over the same period a year ago.

Meanwhile, oil prices were slightly lower at stock market opening on Tuesday.

The American benchmark West Texas Intermediate was down 0.5 percent to $45.73, while the international benchmark Brent crude was trading at $46.89 a barrel with a 0.2 percent decline.
